Middle School Solo & Ensemble
For middle school Solo & Ensemble, students and teachers must select a song of their own choosing for the performance. There is no required repertoire list, unlike high school. However, there is a suggested repertoire list, which is located below along with links to solo books we own. Songs must be developmentally appropriate for the age and skill of the performer, and must be of a classical, folk, or art song nature. Musical theatre will be considered at the discretion of Mrs. Metzger.
Suggested Repertoire List
Folk Songs for Solo Singers Vol.1
Folk Songs for Solo Singers Vol.2
15 Easy FolkSong Arrangements
Students are encouraged to request a solo from the suggested list, or one of their own choosing, and Mrs. Metzger will approve or reject the request. If the student owns a literature book with the requested song in it, they should notify Mrs. Metzger. If not, she will work to secure copies of the music if possible. If no song request is given, the choice of song will be at Mrs. Metzger's discretion.

Ensembles are varied in both voicing and numbers. Ensembles can be in a mixed-voice, all men, or all women format, and range from 3-12 performers. Ensembles have no suggested list, and would perform one of our previously-performed choral pieces. Because of their more complex nature, interested ensemble members should arrange a brief meeting with Mrs. Metzger prior to signing up. Once approved, interested ensembles should only have one member sign up, and include the names of other members on the form.
Rules & Expectations
The following list highlights just a few of the various rules and requirements set forth by OMEA for the Solo & Ensemble event. These MUST be adhered to, or you risk the withholding of your final score, comments, or disqualification from the event. Please see the link for the full list of rules below.
- All vocal solos must be performed from memory.
- Audio or video recording of any performance is strictly prohibited.
- Foreign language pieces must be performed in their written language.
In addition to these requirements, I have my own list of requirements for participation, and terms of agreement to participate.
Sign-up Deadline - TBA
- Please only sign up if you are seriously interested in performing, and willing to dedicate the appropriate amount of practice and effort into your performance.
- Students are expected to practice regularly on their own. All songs must be learned by the first rehearsal.
- You may request a song from the required repertoire list. However, final choice of song and class are up to Mrs. Metzger.
- You MUST schedule at least 2 rehearsals outside of class time prior to the event. Once signed up, a rehearsal schedule will be shared with you via Google Docs.
- All students will be required to pay for their solo registration fee. The choir account cannot continue to cover the large number of student performers based on our fundraising income. The solo registration fee is $16, and must be paid by the deadline if you wish to participate. Ensemble fees are $20, and will be negotiated with each ensemble prior to registration.
- Registration fees can be paid via cash, or check made to "Jackson City Schools."
- As the director, I reserve the right to cancel your event if you show inadequate effort or preparation. This can happen before you’ve even been registered, or the day before the event. If I cancel your event past the registration deadline, you will not be reimbursed your registration fee, as it will already be paid towards OMEA. This is non-negotiable, and by signing up for this event, you agree to these terms.
